TL;DR
Bell cup wear or bearing failure on the EcoBell3 rotary atomizer causes paint film defects and uneven spray pattern. Measure bell cup runout and check bearing air pressure before each production run.
What you might see
- paint film shows mottled or uneven texture
- atomizer air bearing noise or vibration
- bell cup edge chipped or worn under inspection
- spray pattern shifted off-center
Likely causes
Bell cup edge chipped from solvent exposure or physical contact
Atomizer air bearing pressure below specification causing shaft wobble
Paint buildup inside the bell cup upsetting balance
Atomizer turbine speed incorrect for the paint viscosity and application requirements
Required tools
- Dial indicator for runout check
- Magnification loupe
- Approved bell cup cleaning solvent
- Air pressure gauge for bearing air check
- Replacement bell cup (if worn)
Safety first
- The EcoBell3 turbine spins above 50,000 RPM. Never touch the bell cup or approach the atomizer without confirming the turbine is fully stopped.
- Paint booth environments contain flammable solvents. Eliminate ignition sources before using cleaning solvents.
- High-voltage electrostatic systems are used on EcoBell atomizers. Follow the full electrical isolation procedure before touching the atomizer head.
Procedure
- 1
Stop the atomizer and allow it to come to rest before any inspection.
Warning: The EcoBell3 turbine operates at speeds exceeding 50,000 RPM. Never approach or reach toward the bell cup while the turbine is running. Confirm the turbine has fully stopped before touching the bell cup. - 2
Inspect the bell cup edge for chips, deposits, or asymmetric wear using a magnification loupe.[1]
- 3
Measure bell cup runout with a dial indicator mounted on a fixed reference. Runout above the Durr specification requires bell cup replacement.[1]
- 4
Check the atomizer bearing air pressure at the bearing air supply port on the robot arm. Compare to the specification.
- 5
Clean paint buildup from inside the bell cup using the approved solvent flush procedure. Do not use metal tools inside the bell cup.
- 6
Re-install the bell cup, confirm bearing air pressure is in range, and run a test spray on a test panel before production.

Excessive overspray buildup in the dry scrubber reduces air flow and degrades paint quality. Follow the limestone powder charge schedule and replace the filter trays before build-up reduces booth airflow below specification.
