Fouling has a fingerprint
Every fouling mode leaves a signature on the temperature profile.
- Uniform rise in approach temperature: gradual scaling across the whole bundle.
- Sudden loss of capacity: a blockage on one pass, or tube plugging from upset conditions.
- Pressure drop rising faster than approach: tube-side fouling on the process side.
- Approach good but heat duty falling: shell-side issue, maybe baffle damage.
