Safety first

Procedure

Stop the generator immediately if the low oil pressure alarm is active. Do not run the engine until the cause is found.
Warning: Running an engine with confirmed low oil pressure will cause rapid and irreversible bearing damage.

Check the oil level with the dipstick. The engine must be stopped and level for at least 5 minutes before reading. If below the low mark, add the correct specification CAT diesel engine oil and recheck.[1]

Read the EMCP oil pressure value and compare to the mechanical oil pressure gauge if one is installed. If the EMCP reads low but the mechanical gauge reads normal, the sensor or EMCP input is faulty.

Inspect the oil filter for condition. If the maintenance interval is exceeded, replace the filter with a CAT-approved filter before diagnosing further.[1]

If oil level is correct and the filter is new, start the engine briefly (under 60 seconds) at idle while watching the oil pressure gauge. If pressure rises then falls, the pump may be losing prime or there is a severe internal leak.

If you confirm actual low oil pressure with a calibrated mechanical gauge, stop the engine and do not restart. Contact a CAT service technician for bearing and pump inspection.

Check for external oil leaks at the valve cover, oil pan, rear main seal, and filter mounting.
