Compressors are where most of the labor goes

Reciprocating compressors on gas service have a specific wear profile. Valves, piston rings, piston rods, and packing. The failure order is roughly predictable, which means PM intervals can be informed by actual hours rather than calendar dates. A machine that runs continuously needs attention more often than one that cycles. Log runtime carefully.

Separators and level control

A separator that is not separating is usually a level-control problem, not a vessel problem. The level transmitter is reading the wrong interface. The dump valve is sticking. The emulsion layer has grown and the target interface has moved. Walk through the level instrument calibration and the dump-valve stroke test before assuming the vessel itself has a problem.

Hazardous area rules

Classified areas have specific rules that do not bend.

• Intrinsically safe tools and instruments only. Non-rated gear is a fire source.
• Hot work requires a permit, a fire watch, and gas testing immediately before starting.
• Confined space entries need continuous atmosphere monitoring and a trained attendant.
• H2S-rated facilities require training, detection, and escape procedures. Sour service is not forgiving.

Corrosion is the long-term problem

Sweet and sour service both corrode. Erosion on sand-bearing flows is aggressive. Pipe walls thin out over years, and by the time a leak appears, the margin has been gone for months. Inspections on a risk-based schedule are the only real defense. Do not skip them because the facility looks fine. The inside of the piping is what matters, not the paint.
