TL;DR
Chiller overtemperature stops the laser to protect the source. Check coolant level, clean the chiller condenser, and verify ambient temperature is within specification before restarting.
What you might see
- machine alarm for laser chiller overtemperature
- laser source shuts off but motion continues
- chiller display shows coolant temperature above limit
- chiller condenser fan running continuously at full speed
Likely causes
Chiller condenser fins blocked with dust reducing heat rejection
Low coolant level reducing thermal capacity of the circuit
High ambient temperature in the machine room exceeding chiller specification
Chiller pump or fan motor fault reducing circulation or air flow
Required tools
- Compressed air blowgun
- TRUMPF-specified coolant mixture
- IR thermometer or ambient thermometer
- LOTO kit
Safety first
- Do not open refrigerant circuits without proper refrigeration certification. Refrigerant release is an environmental and health hazard.
- Lock out the chiller before reaching inside the condenser section.
Procedure
- 1
Stop production and allow the chiller to run idle until the coolant temperature drops below the alarm threshold.
- 2
Lock out the chiller electrical supply before cleaning the condenser.
Warning: The chiller contains refrigerant under pressure. Do not open refrigerant circuits unless certified. Contact TRUMPF service for refrigerant-related faults. - 3
Clean the chiller condenser fins with compressed air, blowing from inside the unit outward to push debris out.
- 4
Check the coolant level in the expansion tank. Add the TRUMPF-specified coolant mixture (distilled water and corrosion inhibitor) if below the min mark.[1]
- 5
Verify the machine room ambient temperature. The chiller specification typically requires ambient below 35 C for rated capacity.[1]
- 6
Confirm the chiller fan is spinning at full speed. A seized fan motor will prevent the chiller from rejecting heat.
- 7
After cleaning and topping up, allow the chiller to stabilize for 10 minutes, then restart the laser source and monitor the coolant temperature.
