Laser cutters, press brakes, turret punches, and plasma cutters all combine servo motion with a cutting process that produces heat and spark. When a cut looks wrong, the cause could be the beam path, the gas supply, the material, or a servo axis that has drifted. The hard part is telling them apart.
A laser that is cutting poorly almost always has an optics problem. Dirty lenses. Misaligned mirrors. A protective window that is cloudy with fume condensation. Before you check power, check the beam path. Check each optic in turn for contamination. Power measurements on a laser with dirty optics will mislead you into replacing hardware that was fine.
Nitrogen cutting on stainless needs high pressure and a tight nozzle. Oxygen cutting on mild steel uses the gas as a fuel. Air cutting is cheap but slow. Any of them can fail silently if gas pressure drops, a regulator creeps, or a dew-point excursion puts moisture into the nitrogen supply. Watch your gas panels. Check regulator stability weekly.
Backgauge accuracy is where bend quality lives.
Class 4 lasers can burn through PPE before you see the beam. Never override an interlock to troubleshoot a cut. Never look at the cut head with the resonator enabled. Beam alignment on a fiber laser is a job for a trained technician with the right tooling. Improvising here will hurt someone.
