TL;DR
Persistent hook swing after stop is usually worn sheave bearings or a trolley alignment issue. Check sheave bearing play first. If bearings are good, adjust the anti-sway brake ramp in the drive.
What you might see
- hook block swings freely after each stop
- load difficult to position accurately
- unusual noise from the sheave block
- rope rubbing on the block side plates
Likely causes
Worn sheave bearings allowing the sheave to wobble and impart a lateral impulse to the rope and hook
Trolley travel misalignment causing the rope to leave the sheave groove and swing on re-engagement
Drive deceleration ramp too abrupt, causing dynamic swing at stop
Asymmetric rope reeving from an incorrect rope change procedure
Required tools
- Feeler gauge (sheave side play)
- Vernier calipers (sheave groove depth)
- Crane drive controller access (ramp parameters)
- LOTO kit
- Replacement sheave bearings (Konecranes OEM)
Safety first
- Lock out the crane and lower all loads before inspecting the hook block assembly.
- Do not operate a hoist with worn sheave bearings. Rope jumping out of a sheave groove can cause a load drop.
Procedure
- 1
Lock out the crane. Lower the hook to the floor.
- 2
Manually push the hook block and observe the sheave rotation. Side play greater than 2 mm indicates worn sheave bearings.[1]
- 3
Inspect the rope groove on each sheave for wear or corrosion. A groove worn more than 10% deeper than nominal concentrates rope pressure and causes premature rope wear.[1]
- 4
Replace worn sheave bearings and any sheave with an out-of-spec groove. Use Konecranes OEM sheave parts to maintain the correct groove radius match.
- 5
Check trolley alignment on the bridge rail. The trolley should track without side-to-side movement. Adjust the trolley rail clamp bolts if lateral play exists.
- 6
If swing persists after mechanical corrections, access the hoist drive parameters and increase the deceleration ramp time to reduce the braking impulse.

How to diagnose a Konecranes CXT hoist that won't lift
If the motor runs but the hook does not move, the hoist brake is stuck engaged. If the motor does not run, read the fault code on the crane controller before anything else.
How to fix hook drift after stop on a Konecranes CXT hoist
Drift after stop means the hoist brake is not holding. Check the brake air gap and pad thickness. A worn spring or glazed disc cannot hold a load safely.
How to diagnose and fix a limit switch failure on a Konecranes CXT hoist
A limit switch that does not stop the hoist is a safety-critical failure. Lock out the crane immediately. Test the switch contacts with a multimeter and replace if contacts do not close at the correct actuator position.
How to fix jerky travel motion on a Konecranes CXT overhead crane
A rhythmic jerk during travel is almost always a flat spot on one travel wheel. Lock out and rotate each wheel by hand to find the flat spot, then replace the wheel.
Stop fixing the same fault twice.
