Likely causes

Safety first
- Never open the enclosure door while the spindle is rotating. Use the controller's door-interlock override only under explicit Haas service guidance.
- Keep hands away from the spindle taper when running bare-spindle tests. Use the enclosure as a barrier.
- Chips in the taper bore are sharp. Use gloved hands and a non-metallic brush for cleaning.
Procedure

Stop the program. Move the spindle to a safe accessible position with the door closed and spindle stopped.

Remove the toolholder and visually inspect it for chips, nicks, or a damaged pull-stud.

Inspect the CAT40 taper bore with a flashlight. Any chips, coolant residue, or corrosion will create a runout-inducing air gap. Clean with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol.[1]

Measure toolholder runout at the shank and at 3 inches from the nose with a dial indicator. Runout above 0.0002 inch at the shank indicates a bad holder.

Run the spindle bare (no toolholder) at 1000, 3000, and 6000 RPM and check for vibration. No vibration without a holder means the holder or tool is the cause.

If vibration persists bare-spindle, check the Haas spindle load meter. Erratic load at low RPM with no toolholder suggests a bearing problem. Contact Haas service.[1]

Replace the suspected toolholder with a balanced-certified holder and retest.

If resonance persists with a known-good holder, adjust RPM by 10% up or down to move out of the resonant frequency range.
