Most CNC mill faults come from three places: the control, the servos, or the utility systems the machine quietly depends on. Experienced techs triage by symptom. A spindle that runs hot will grow in Z. Parts drift out of spec mid-cycle. You check your offsets, they look right, the next part is fine again. This is thermal growth. The fix is usually in the shop HVAC, not the machine. If your shop does not hold temperature inside a tight band, expect drift on any long cycle. Log it against asset temperature so you can tell whether the mill is moving or the room is.
Call the OEM for ball-screw replacement, for spindle bearing changes, for anything that involves re-mastering a rotary axis, and for any crash where the axis geometry might be off. Fixing these in-house usually costs more in lost production than the service call would have.
