Industrial fans are reliable until they are not. Most of them run for years with nothing more than lubrication. Then one day the bearings fail, or the rotor picks up buildup, or an inlet damper actuator fails closed, and you have a problem that stops the process upstream.
A fan that was quiet last month and shakes this month usually has buildup on the blades. Product. Condensate. Dust that the filter did not catch. Sometimes it is erosion rather than buildup (one blade is worn thinner than the others, which unbalances the rotor). Both require the same fix: pull the rotor, clean or replace it, and field-balance it before returning to service.
A fan that looks sick is often fine, but the duct upstream is restricted. A damper that did not fully open. A filter that is blinded. A duct run someone added that increases static pressure beyond what the fan was sized for. Before you blame the fan, check its inlet conditions.
An ID fan on a kiln or a boiler is not a small fan scaled up. It has significant inertia, which means it windmills for minutes after shutdown. It is accessed from walkways that are often slippery and poorly lit. Its bearings are usually water-cooled or oil-lubricated and need attention the PMs sometimes skip. And its motor is often in a remote MCC someone else can re-energize by accident.
Field balancing on large fans (above about 200 horsepower) requires specialized gear and a calm day. Rotor rebuilds on erosive service need the right material selection. Any structural crack going back under vibration needs qualified repair. These are not places to save money on the service call.
