TL;DR
A shaker drive fault stops agitation in the retort, reducing heat transfer and risking process failure. Identify mechanical jam or motor fault before restarting.
What you might see
- shaking mechanism stopped mid-cycle
- drive fault alarm on PLC
- uneven container stack movement
- motor overload trip on shaker drive
Likely causes
Mechanical jam in the crank arm or oscillating mechanism from a misloaded basket
Motor overload from excessive load mass exceeding the drive design
Drive coupling failure disconnecting the motor from the mechanism
Bearing failure in the crank arm pivot
Required tools
- LOTO kit
- Multimeter
- Inspection flashlight
- Torque wrench
Safety first
- The shaker mechanism has pinch points. Never reach into the mechanism without the drive LOTO in place.
- Hot retort vessel contents can cause severe burns. Confirm the vessel is de-pressurized and cooled before opening any access panel near the vessel.
Procedure
- 1
Stop the retort cycle safely. De-pressurize and cool the vessel before opening or accessing the shaker drive mechanism.
Warning: The retort vessel is pressurized during operation. Complete a safe shutdown sequence before approaching the shaker drive access panels. - 2
Lock out the shaker drive motor and the retort steam supply.[1]
- 3
Inspect the crank arm and oscillating linkage for a jam or obstruction. A misloaded basket can lodge against the mechanism.[1]
- 4
Attempt to rotate the crank arm manually. Resistance beyond normal indicates a bearing fault or jam.
- 5
Inspect the drive coupling between the motor and the crank mechanism for physical damage.
- 6
Check the motor winding resistance and current trip log. Compare to nameplate FLA.
- 7
Verify the loaded basket mass is within the design limit for the shaker drive. Overloading is the most common cause of recurring drive faults.

Temperature distribution failure means the entire retort load is not reaching the process temperature uniformly. Check the steam supply, vent valve operation, and load arrangement before releasing product.
